Who We Are

Founded in 1937, The North Carolina Student Legislature, Inc. (NCSL) is the oldest student-run, nonpartisan legislative organization in the nation. For over 88 years, we have provided students across North Carolina with a platform to debate, draft, and pass legislation that mirrors the real legislative process.

NCSL isn’t just a debate society—it’s a training ground for future leaders. Through contention, civility, and camaraderie, our members develop critical thinking, public speaking, and leadership skills while directly engaging with state government officials, policymakers, and professionals.

Our Structure

NCSL operates like the North Carolina state government, with an elected Governor and Council of State that oversees operations. Delegates from colleges and universities across the state participate in legislative debate, committees, and leadership development.
