Major: Political Science/Pre-Law
As Attorney General, Matthew Simonson serves as the chief legal officer of NCSL, responsible for advising the Governor and Council of State on parliamentary law, constitutional matters, and organizational rules. This role also includes maintaining, distributing and interpreting the official governing documents of NCSL, such as the Constitution, Bylaws, and Standing Rules. The Attorney General oversees the chartering of delegations, ensures that amendments to the Constitution are properly formatted and incorporated, and works alongside the Sergeant-at-Arms to enforce procedural compliance and decorum at legislative sessions.
Since taking office, Matthew has worked closely with Governor Joseph Gbedji to restore parliamentary procedure to Interim Councils, reinforcing proper legislative structure. He also played a key role in implementing a Standing Rules and Code of Ethics, which he, Axel Ruiz, his Deputy, and Joseph passed at the Elon Interim Council. Additionally, Matthew has reestablished the Judiciary and Elections Committee, ensuring that NCSL has a functioning oversight and electoral process.
Matthew is a sophomore at Campbell University, majoring in Political Science/Pre-Law with a minor in Christian Studies. He transferred from The Citadel to Campbell in his first year. Outside of NCSL, Matthew works as a Pool Manager and Red Cross Instructor, where he trains individuals in water safety and emergency response. He is also deeply involved in Scouting, having earned his Eagle Scout in 2021, and continues to serve as an adult leader, mentoring young Scouts in leadership and personal development. He also plans to attend law school after graduating.
Fun fact: Matthew is ordained to perform marriages in South Carolina.
