Joseph Gbedji

Governor

Major: Political Science/Pre-Law


As Governor, Joseph Gbedji serves as the chief executive officer of the organization, overseeing its operations and ensuring that NCSL remains a strong and functional student-led body. His responsibilities include presiding over the Council of State, making executive appointments, setting the organization’s strategic direction, representing NCSL in official capacities, and chairing Interim Council's utilizing Roberts Rules of Order. Joseph also serves as Chairperson of the Board of Directors, where he helps oversee the financial and long-term stability of the organization.


Since taking office, Joseph has focused on rebuilding and expanding NCSL, with particular emphasis on bringing Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) back into NCSL. Additionally, he has worked closely with Attorney General Matthew Simonsonto recruit other public and private institutions into the organization. Another major initiative under his leadership has been restoring proper parliamentary procedure to NCSL’s monthly Interim Councils, ensuring that legislative debate and decision-making follow professional and structured processes. Furthermore, he has led efforts to reestablish a proper working relationship with the North Carolina General Assembly (NCGA), strengthening NCSL’s relevance as a model state legislature.


Joseph is a senior at Campbell University, set to graduate next winter. He has been an active member of NCSL for three years, previously serving as Treasurer before being elected Governor. Outside of NCSL, Joseph is a club soccer player and a Campus Ministry Leader. After graduation, Joseph plans to attend law school, where he hopes to continue his journey in public service and advocacy.
